Ross Lyon reveals that he has turned down Collingwood’s offer as manager due to the club’s “instability”

Ross Lyon has revealed that he has rejected an approach by Collingwood regarding his position as senior manager due to the current “instability” surrounding the club.

The former St Kilda and Fremantle manager was the hot tip to take over from either Collingwood or Carlton rivals, who are expected to part ways with current manager David Teague in the coming weeks.

After initially hinting that they were not interested in returning to AFL coaching circles, Lyon changed their minds in the last week and revealed an advance from Magpies football boss Graham Wright.

“I don’t think Graham Wright would mind, he reached out to a friend to get my number and I was aware and respectfully said I wouldn’t entertain him for a variety of reasons,” Lyon told Nine’s. Footy Classified.

“It’s hard to articulate. Sometimes it’s just, sometimes it’s just chemistry.”

Collingwood has been engulfed in off-screen controversy throughout the season, with a nasty battle for the presidency taking place behind the scenes between outgoing Mark Korda and challenger Jeff Browne. Lyon admitted that the antics of the board of directors played a part in his decision.

“If you get a headhunter ring and go meet them and go for work, if you don’t have that chemistry, it happens pretty fast, well it doesn’t or it shouldn’t,” he said. “If Ed [McGuire] if he were president of Collingwood it would be a whole other story. “

“I think it’s instability. I think Nathan is a bit unlucky. I don’t know Nathan, Nathan is not a friend, but only from the outside … I think if you see a mismatch it’s a red flag.”

Despite connections to Carlton’s work and pushes from individuals associated with the club to be the next manager, Lyon said he would be a second choice behind Alastair Clarkson.

“If an opportunity presents itself, and I say it with the utmost respect for Carlton, and they call me, I would enjoy it, but I also understand that I don’t have tickets for me, it’s a hot field, Alastair Clarkson is available,” he said.

“Yup, [I’ll] certainly take the call and consider it. I am aware that there are enough Carlton people, Carlton famous people, Premiership players, coaches, former champions who are supporting in a way because they have worked with me or they know me personally and understand their club and there are that kind of connections, so I know this is happening too. “

Lyon added that they believed Clarkson would become Carlton’s next manager after his Hawthorn exit was finalized earlier in the year, echoing what AFL columnist Caroline Wilson has been reporting throughout the year. ‘year.

“What I’m going to tell you, Caroline, is that you’ve been okay with Alastair in Hawthorn the whole time and it’s been perfect,” she said.

“As part of that you were saying, I’ll paraphrase, but that Alastair Clarkson was going to coach Carlton Football Club.

“I, with all the intelligence I have in the market, I think they will talk to Alastair at the right time, which is next week and I think you are not wrong yet and I still do not believe you are wrong.”

Carlton’s current manager David Teague is currently under contract for the 2022 season.
